american legion bridge. a lot less congestion than normal. and virginia 395 inside the beltway through arlington and uu toward the 14th street bridge. hov restrictions lifted. and here's new york avenue north capitol street normally very congested. this morning virtually empty. that's a check of your fox 5 on time trachlt >> the country music world is in mourning today following the sudden death of singer mindy mccready. >> sarah simmons is back with a look at her life and how stars are paying their respects. >> good morning allison and tony. police found the body sunday afternoon in her home in arkansas.as they say the 37-year-old likely died of a self inflicted gunshot to the dead. made headlines in the 90s for hits like guys do it all the

time and 10,000 angels. she went through a public battle with substance abuse and a custody battle for her two young sons. her death comes one month after david wilson. her long time boyfriend. he shot himself at the same porch they shared. authorities have not said where her children are. but earlierbu this month she gave them up top foster care. news of her death spread quickly and fellow country stars used twitter payay their respects.r too much tragedy to overcome. rip mindy. carrie underwood added i iegrew up listening to mindy. so sad for her family. many prayers areye going out to them. o an autopsy will be performed today. mindy attempted suicide three other times since 2005. such a sad story. allison and tony.

battle to avoid billions of dollars and across the board spending cuts is on hold while law makers are on vacation. >> congress will have one week to strike a deal or the impact will be felt across the country. tmelanie alnwick is live on capitol hill with more. good morning, melanie. >> reporter: good morning,er tony. and how ding these impacts will be really depends where you are. the cuts are necessary in order to deal with the deficit. we have republicans and democrats d working very hard to protect their favorite program. and really doesn't seem to be much hope for a compromise. republicans pointed out the across the board budget cuts were president obama's idea. part of the deal made in congress. the agreement was to find $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction over ten years. with the economy making strides, the white house arguest now is not

a special visa for illegal immaterial grants allowing them to stay in the u.s. only those who have been convicted of less than three crimes and spent no more than a year in prison. a bipartisan deal is also in the works which would require full boarder security before pathway to citizenship is offered. meanwhile, senator john mccain is speaking out about the delay to vote on the defense d secretary pick. republicans should stop stalling a vote despite a his belief that chuck hagel is not qualified to run the pentagon. >> making headlines around the region now, the investigation continues into a house fire in southeast that critically injuredt a little girl. g flames ripped through this home on 33rd street yesterday morning.ay the 4 year old girl remains in the hospital. a 2 year old boy and

three adults were treated for minor injuries. the home's owner is charged with felony threats and simple assault. investigators say he made threats against one of the women living at that home while crews worked to put out the flames.t police on the eastern shore are investigating the murder of a college student. 21-year-old edmond saint clair was stabbed to death on the campus of the university of maryland eastern shore. police do not believen this was a random crime and may have been the result of an argument that was on going or on-going disput. >> and a virginia family will be waiting to hear the resultses of a vote in the virginia senate today. law makers are scheduled to vote on a bill that would make it easier for parents, guardians or other representatives to get access to a minor's online accounts after that minor is death. ricky and diane rash hunted for clues into their teenage son's suicide in

to help mark president's day, the race to mount rushmore comes to an end. they'll meet george, abe and tom there. i feel like i should call them the president. mr. president tom and george. fans can decide who wins by voting on twitter. >> meanwhile, president obama spent the holiday weekend on the green in florida and joined by a special guest. the president teed off with tiger woods. got lessons on his swing from wood's former coach. >> i thought we were going to have pictures. >> i was looking for it. butch and tiger did not -- that's interesting to me. maybe he gave him pointers he didn't give tiger. >> obviously, dave ross is here. cap's rally comes to an end. >> they won three in a row. they beat florida and tampa down in florida and had to come back

up north and play in the world's most famous arena. taking on the blue shirts known as new york rangers. this is the first time they've matched up since last year's semi finals. the caps went down. john carlson got us on the board there. but their guy they call him the king in nyc didn't give up any more goals. our guy was very good. traffic in front gets the equalizer right there. and we were all tied up going into the third. hanging out in front. caps lose 2-1. they now have 11 points which is not good. tied for the least amount of points. 5-9 and 1 as we've played 15 games. only 48 game season. >> i have a question at the end of your sports cast.

it looks promising. not going to be a warm day but better than yesterday. less wind, more sunshine. >> all right. let's take a spin around the country and point out a couple features. 23 in washington. 16 in boston. the nationals were freezing yesterday. it's cold in florida. you can't see it. but 38 in tampa . and they have hard freeze warnings down to central portions of florida. high temperature in miami will only be 70. currently it's 49 there. they don't take that well at all down there. let's mention the warmer or milder temperatures. st. louis is 45. we're not going to warmup in the 60s but tomorrow afternoon we should warm it up into the upper 40s and 50s. a lot of sunshine for your monday. i mentioned temperatures about 40. and less wind. we'll take all of those weather features and out to the

prices. the nationwide average for a gallon of regular climbed 15 cents in the last week. that brings it to $3.73. in just the last month, the price at the pump has climbed more than 40 cents. blame the rising price of oil. drivers in dc are paying close to $4. maryland and virginia pay a little bit less. >> there are a number of events celebrating president's day in our area today. among them a parade in honor of george washington's birthday. this goes from 1 to 3 this afternoon. near city hall's market's square. mount vernon also throwing a birthday bash for the president. from 8 until 4 this afternoon. nice way to honor the founding fathers. >> it is 7:20 on this monday morning. we're going to hear from the parents of a toddler

can you imagine someone wanting to hurt him? >> that's what people across the country are asking after a bizarre incident on board a delta flight earlier this month. an idaho man slapped a toddler and called him a racial slur during a flight from minneapolis to atlanta. >> that man is facing federal charges and been fired from his job. according to authorities, joe ricky hunley was flying next to jessica and her son. he was drinking and baligerant and saying her son was too old to

sit on his lap. jonah began crying and he demanded he be quiet. >> fell on to my face and his mouth was in my ear and he said it again but even more hateful. he was on my face. i pushed him away. that's when he slapped jonah. he could have hit my son so hard. >> and caused permanent damage. >> this is a grown man hitting a toddler. >> he is charged with simple assault and could face up to a year in jail if he's convicted. >> changing a child's behavior could be as simple as changing the channel in some cases. a study out today shows switching from violent shows to

fragments of the meteor that exploded over russia on friday. >> scientists checked out a frozen lake. showed off small space rock fragments. clean up from damage caused continued today. much of the glass blown out of windows from the sonic boom has already been replaced. loud enough for sensors halfway around the world to pick it up. wow. >> i was very happy when friday -- was it friday when the asteroid came and pass. i was looking at the clock. 2:36 came and went away. ignorance really is bliss. i don't know what happened. >> can be. the truth is most of the meteors and asteroids that come by we don't see. >> which is also a little unsettling. you have no control over the bigger thing. fingers crossed and be the best person

lots of layers if you are going to be out early. we should warm it up near 40 this afternoon. and should be more comfortable than it was yesterday. we're expecting a lot of sunshine. high pressure is going to keep us dry today. don't have a lot to talk about. we will start to cloud up tonight out towards st. louis and our next storm system will bring us a chance for showers along with milder air tomorrow afternoon. we're expecting highs about 50. when this system gets in here early tomorrow morning driving to work. it is possible parts of the area generally west of town for the communities and the mountains could be dealing with freezing rain or sleet. we want to look out for that possibility. 41 today. winds north and west at about 5. 32 tonight increasing clouds and cold overnight. winds are shifting out of the south. and it will get here by tomorrow

them saving this off. >> we have been talking about this for quite sometime and some of our folks here have talked to people who may be affected by this. some government programs and defense, there's a lot of questions and question marks as to how prepared do they need to be. how much will they be cut and that type of thing. how much uncertainly is there out there? >> there's a lot of uncertainty. don't know when this will go into affect. they could change their minds two minutes after the last minute. it's never clear how this will play out. no matter what happens, there will be significant cuts in federal spending and every one of those cuts affects somebody. either affects you or the person who works next to you or the supplier who provides to you. there will be cuts. everybody has to be prepare had had for that. the pentagon has started scaling back its contracting. bloomberg had a nice story about

this this morning. really starting to already see the impacts play out to the economy. >> if it happens, on day one of sequestration, automatically programs do the heads of agencies say all right this is gone, this is reduced? >> more or less, yeah. i think it's approximately 8% across the board for the rest of this year. now, obviously, they can't furlough people immediately. that requires a 30 day process. they still have to sift through how much they are going to cut. some of that will take time play out. you could see changes and scaling back almost immediately. some of these things do take time to play out. >> let's say it takes a week or two and then suppose congress during that time comes up with a

solution and says sequestration is over, how much havoc does that wreak? >> life in federal government. any solution that congress comes up with will still see cuts. the whole idea is to try and get $85 billion out of this year's budget even if it's less than that. even if some is done through tax increases. still going to see cuts through the budget. the question of how much and who and down to the dollar of who doesn't get to order that extra box of pens. that's what we're talking about. those kind of things will take times to play out. >> once those cuts are made, i guess they are definitive. you don't get that money back. >> this is only the first year of what is intended to be a ten year budget cutting process. we have gotten into a stage now where you are going to see leaner federal budgets over the next few years.

that's all there is to it. people are unhappy about sequester is there's no real opportunity to decide what is important and less important. that's where the frustration comes in. even if we can figure outlets do this better and more strategically, you are still going to see cuts. >> you hear from some people who say because it's across the board in a wooerd way, it's the fairest way to do it. >> that was the reason they did it, i think. they figured it would take so long to negotiate out whether your program is more important than mine. this is the only way to do it is do it all at once. congress has done this for years. the same basic theory. we can't make the hard decisions. let's take it an easy decision. close our eyes and start slashing. >> all right. i know you'll be writing more about it.

all right. this is live footage you are seeing from sky fox of another fire. we told you about a fire in herndon. this one is in falls church virginia in shadow walk lane. it is now a 2 alarm fire. a second alarm has been sounded. we are told that additional lines are going to work. i'm not even sure exactly what that means. but it is now a 2 alarm fire in falls church. you can see it is an active fire and see the flashing lights of some of the fire apparatus there is there right now. keep you posted on this as well as

just her moving in when president obama was elected in 2012. certainly things to mrs. regan's biography. to mrs. fords. we'll look at mrs. clinton. one edition had two term first lady. next term had her as a senator. and the third had her as secretary of state. >> she must do something with her life. >> but all these women do. >> give us fun tidbits maybe people don't know about first ladies. >> when you think about having people to dinner. you think about the white house dinners. you think about it's show for ball gowns. really what happens is it's the women who decide who is going to sit next to each other. so who sits next to each other in white house major dinners impacts policy, trade, business deals. sometimes people even get engaged over those dinners.

congress goes on vacation. >> that means when law makers return, they will have one week to strike a deal. melanie alnwick is live on capitol hill now with the latest. melanie, how likely is it a deal can be made by march 1st? >> reporter: i don't know. doesn't sound very optimistic . even the white house says it is doing everything they can to avoid sequester. there is a sense of resignation that the sequester is a real possibility whether it kicks in for a few weeks or full 10 year term. among the programs bracing for these cut backs, head start for pre-schoolers, department of agriculture looking at cutting back food inspections. loan guarantees will be hit. every federal agency will have to cut budget beginning march 1st. it is part of a deal made in exchange for raising the debt ceiling in 2011. $1.2 trillion over 10 years.

secretary of gop opponents stalled the former senator's bid and challenged past statements. votes on nuclear weapons and criticism of george w bush's administration. now those opponents and that includes senator john mccain says there have been enough time and likely proceed when senators come back to work next week. also in washington, a leaked immigration proposal from the white house is drawing harsh criticism from republicans. the draft bill leaked to usa today will create a special visa for illegal immigrants allowing them to stay in the u.s. while they wait for permanent legal status. the president is using the leak to gain a political edge. bipartisan deal is also in the works which would require full boarder security. >> a virginia family has a vested interest in the result of a vote in the virginia senate today. vote on a bill that

back now with a fox 5 follow up. a 4 year old girl remains in critical condition following an early morning house fire on sunday. the fire broke out at this home on 33rd street in southeast around 3:00 a.m. several other people inside the home were taken to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation but have since been released. 46-year-old jeremy calvary lewis is charged with felony threats and simple assault. he was making threats against one of the women living at the home while crews worked to put the flames out. >> dc police trying to track down the person behind the wheel of a deadly hit and run. just after 10:30 saturday night a pedestrian fell into the crosswalk and was hit. 100 block of m street northeast near

 this is my friend didiane. she's played by the rules her whole life. but then the rules flew right out the window. having just lost her husband, she stepped up and adopted her three grandkids, while working full time and caring for her brother, eddie, with cerebral palsy. i get the three children up. i walk andrew at eight i drop olivia off at eight thirty. spend a few minutes at emilio's school. i stop at the grocery store, and then i might do some laundry that has to be done. and then i have about five minutes. the baby sitter comes in and then i go to work. i'm not back home again until 11:30 at night. hard as she works, it's still a struggle to keep up with the bills and stay warm at night. when we asked the biggest oil companies to help families in need, only citgo, the people of venezuela, and president hugo chavez responded. thanks to them, citizens energy is able to deliver millions of gallons of fuel to families just like diane's.

doing a detriment to a workout. so four strong days versus 6 days. >> you are exactly right. a lot of people don't realize the workout is just as important as the rest time. so that's why when we're out and not getting proper sleep, sometimes you can be working out all the time but not getting proper sleep. >> amen to that. if we're bored, you can put a spark. >> definitely. one thing that's holding people back is sometimes people get injured and a lot of that is we haven't solidified foundation. our core and core strengthing is core. >> going to show us something? >> i like to show these body weight exercises. this is a normal plank. this is something you can do in the office, at home or if you have time to go to the gym.
